RON
AKIYAMA - PHOTOGRPAHER
For over 25 years, Ron Akiyama has found the
perfect combination of photography and music. What
started as a hobby to provide a visual reminder of
sitting close to his favorite rock bands eventually
became much, much more. “I always felt
there was a major difference between just taking
pictures of a concert and “capturing” the
feeling of actually being there” says Ron. “The
results of a great shot should make anyone feel like
they are right there, front row center, enjoying
the show the way I did. This also means the performer
must also look like they are giving 110%. It should
be the way they see themselves. It is a tough combination.
Not as easy as it seems. In the age of digital, everyone
takes pictures. This to me is only half the story.
You should also have a business sense, patience,
timing, be able to adapt and adjust in seconds, a
little luck, and most of all, know your subject.
My hats off to all music photographers who continue
to capture these images throughout the years, and
to the photographers starting out who want to do
the same.”
In his 25 year career, Ron Akiyama has
shot for Bruce Springsteen, Megaforce Atlantic,
Epic Records, Overkill, Anthrax, Ace Frehley, Danzig,
MOD, SOD, Prong, Testament, Megadeth, Kings X,
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and many more.
BRIAN
RADEMACHER'S PHOTOS
Brian says
"When I started out failing photography courses
in school, I never could have imagined I would
end up in the music world, by being a staff photographer
for the mighty ‘Metal Forces Magazine’,
one of the legendary bibles of Thrash. Working
independently, I stumbled across this long hair
dude named Frank White, my mentor, a person who
took me under his wing and sort of became my agent.
I have to thank Frank for being a great friend
and teacher as I learned the ropes, and with his
help I became a better photographer. My photos
have appeared in Hit Parader, Metal Edge, Enfer
and many others thanks in part to Frank. Working
on “Get Thrashed” and looking at the
rough draft it’s hard to believe I came out
alive in some of those situations photographing
Slayer, King Diamond, Exodus, Kreator, Metallica
and many others. The movie sure does bring back
so many great memories. Now, I run my own site
Rockeyez.com and I still use my photos from back
in the day on some of the stories we publish."

SLIPPED
DISC RECORDS
For most thrash fans, weekly or daily trips to the
local record store were the best way to buy records
and keep in touch with the scene. Today, the mom & pop
shops that were so important to the thrash metal scene
in the 1980’s are all but gone as large chains
have put the boots to the indie stores. But a few carry
the torch and one of the best is SLIPPED
DISC RECORDS in Valley Stream, NY. If
you were a metalhead on Long Island in the 80’s
and 90’s, it was impossible not to know about
this mecca of metal.
My friends and I would ride our bikes 30 minutes each
way to pick up the latest and coolest new metal shirts
and albums. Today I drive 40 minutes to drop
by the store.
There is/was virtually nothing Slipped Disc did not
have in stock and it was always so exciting to walk
in and see what new stuff had arrived. Plus, you’d
meet fellow metal fans and talk about albums, upcoming
shows etc. It was – and is to this day – a “clubhouse” of
sorts for metal fans in the area. To describe the experience
as a “kid in a candy store” does not begin
to describe a “Slipped Disc experience.”
It was (and is) awesome.
They had all those hard to find imports.
They carried Metal Forces, Kerrang, Metal Hammer and
all the cool metal mags.
They had the new Sacred Reich, Onslaught, Zno White,
Metallica, Testament etc albums the day they were released – no
waiting or wondering if it would be in stock.
They supported local bands and helped promote local
shows.
And perhaps, coolest of all were the in-stores. Bands
like Slayer, Exodus, Sepultura, Megadeth, Death Angel,
Flotsam & Jetsam, Twisted Sister, Motorhead – the
list of bands they brought in for fans to meet was
endless.
This month, we pay homage to Slipped Disc Records as
they launch their website www.SlippedDiscRecords.com.
Everything that turned me on to the store in the 80’s
is still alive and true today. It my opinion, it’s
the BEST METAL RECORD STORE in the world.
So if you’re interested in keeping these indie
metal stores alive, please drop by the site and by
any means necessary – STOP BY THE STORE if you’re
in NY / on Long Island. Trust me it’s worth the
trip and a must see if you’re in town. We
hope you enjoy these photos from the Slipped Disc “in
store” archives.
Thanks to Mike and Randy for hooking us up!!!
MATTHIAS
PRILL
Most thrash fans have never had the opportunity to
meet their favorite band, have a beer with them or even
brush elbows with them. So in a lot of ways,Matthias
Prill lived the life every thrash fan would have loved
to live. In 1981 he got into tape trading and in 1983,
when he was 18 he started the
first official Venom fan club and began promoting thrash
shows with bands like Sodom, Destruction, Slayer in
the Frankfurt/Germany area. From there he began selling
merchandise for Empire Posters in Europe, managing the
band EXUMER and quit school to go on the legendary
Venom / Exodus tour in Europe where Venom flew him
to Italy to start their tour and do merch. He became,
and remains friends with many bands and ended up getting
an up close &
personal look at it all:
"hitching" a ride with everybody from Metallica
to Slayer for a week here and there, just for fun.
Sleeping on the Anthrax tour bus and crashing on the
floor of Scott Ian's room. Hanging out with Metallica,
Venom, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies and Exodus. The
drinking, the partying and the fun of a time gone by
were all captured by Matthias and we thank him for
sharing his pictures and memories with us for the first
time anywhere. Matthias has lived in Brazil since 1988
and runs a concert office out of Sao Paulo. He is promoting
and touring bands all over South America. Some of the
bands he worked with recently include old friends like
Exodus, Exploited, GBH, Misfits and many others. Matthias
and partners are also currently building a hotel in
Paraty beach (Rio de Janeiro state).
FRANK
WHITE - PHOTOGRPAHER
When he started taking photos at shows he attended
as a teenager in the mid 70's, Frank White couldn't
have imagined he'd eventually be called "The
Legend" by his comrades in the photo world.
One of the most prolific
photographers from the NY/NJ area, Frank taught
himself the business and turned his hobby into
a career. He started shooting thrash bands in 1982
and continues to travel the world shooting metal
bands. His photos have appeared in magazines like
Guitar World, Circus, Kerrang, Hit Parader, Kick
Ass Monthly, Cream, Revolver and others.
CHRISTINE
NATANAEL - CRUSHER Magazine
We could like to thank Christine for sharing some
photos from her personal archive. She is a strong
presence in the NYC music scene and Crusher Magazine
is one of the most informative on-line magazines
on the web today! Make sure to visit the site and
tell them that "Get Thrashed" sent ya!
Thanks again to Christine for her contributions.
TODD
GORDON -co-founder TORRID RECORDS
While most of us thank our lucky stars that Exodus
came upon the thrash metal scene, the real thanks
goes to Todd Gordon who signed Exodus to the label
he co-founded in 1984 - Torrid Records. Released
in April 1985, Bonded By Blood went on to become
one of the best thrash albums of all time and as
far as the stories and rumors that the label held
up it's release, Todd says "the original artwork
was what held up the release. It featured the band
standing over an assortment of hacked up body parts
and had to be nixed due to it's graphic nature
and the conservative climate at the time (remember
the PMRC?). We couldn't get anyone to distribute
something with that artwork. The time it took to
re-design was what delayed the album by about 6
months." Thanks to Todd for contributing his pictures
to Get Thrashed.
HARALD O.
If you attended a thrash show in the Bay area in the
80's, you probably know the name and/or face of Harald
O. He was the unofficial photographer of the scene back
in the day and took hundreds of photos of Metallica,
Megadeth and others. His photos have appeared on albums
like Exodus' Bonded By Blood, Slayer's Hell Awaits, Metallica's
Ride the Lightning and others. His name was even immortalized
in song by the Metallica side project/bastard child band
Spastic Children. The sights, sounds & stories he has
about the early years of the thrash scene are the stuff
books are made of (and that is in the works!)
Today,
Harald plays bass for DRI and runs a pop culture novelty
store in Berkley,CA. Much thanks to him for allowing us
to use his photos on the site and in the documentary.
Check
back soon for more of Harald's images.
We will be updating this section and
adding other classic shots from his
archives. It is with his help that
we have been able to put this page
together.
